Black Forest Smoothie

Black Forest Smoothie

This Black Forest Smoothie tastes so indulgent, it seemed fitting to name it after the classic dessert… you’d never guess there’s sneaky greens in it!

Black Forest Smoothie

When my tot first started eating solids, he would gamely nibble anything we put in front of him. Smugly I would watch him shovel handfuls of lentil curry into his mouth, suck on a wedge of grapefruit, devour slices avo toast. However, right as he turned one, Mr James suddenly became a lot more selective about what he was going to eat, and vegetables became the biggest struggle.

So, we are working on it, but in the meantime I like to start each day with a smoothie. Curiously, if the contents of a smoothie were to arrive on his plate in their whole and separate forms, they would be swiftly removed with a deft sweep of the arm, but whizzed up together he will happily suck it down (and then ask for more!).

This is one of my current favourites, its got a lovely tart sweetness from the cherries and chocolate that reminds me ofΒ classic Black Forest Gateau. Plus there’s a little extra nutrition bump from secret spinach and a sprinkle of flax (or chia). I like to use frozen cherries because they are already pitted (yay), and available all year.

Serves: 2-4 smoothies
Ingredients
  • 2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or milk of choice, but i do like the vanilla in this!)
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • 2 medjool dates (chopped)
  • 1 handful of baby spinach
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-2 tbsp flax or chia seed (optional)
Method
  1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth!

Notes

I find that the dates and banana add enough sweetness to counteract the bitterness of the cocoa, but you can always add a dash of honey and sweeten to taste.
